This proxy narrator tells the story of King Paramenter of Sosun, a monarch who finds himself impotent and unable to produce a male heir. “The Storyteller’s Replacement” breaks the fourth wall with our narrator announcing that they are stepping in for the usual storyteller. We eventually see what this world entails-including a parallel, imperfect world-and that this paradise carries a cost of its own, one enforced by beings called social workers, who seem more like bounty hunters than people who help. Jemisin refers to that story when outlining her own utopia, her narrator claiming hers to be better. LeGuin’s classic, “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas,” the tale of an ideal world that comes with a severe price. The opening story, “The Ones Who Stay and Fight,” is a direct reference to Urula K. This is the first time I’ve ever read her work, so let’s talk about it. Jemisin is a notable sci-fi writer, winner of most of that genre’s major awards, including a Hugo and a Nebula. Jemisin‘s 2018 collection, How Long ’til Black Future Month? out this year from Orbit Books. I don’t want to report anything here now, let alone make any predictions, so I think I’ll just get to the book. Things have escalated in that department, exponentially.
